You're right about Seeking a Sanctuary--Bull and Lockhart did write that the average person who joins the Adventist church does so through a prophecy seminar, and they are usually lower-middle class; and because so many Adventists are employed by the church or by church organizations, and because Adventists emphasize education, most who join have a higher income by the time that they leave (and they usually leave).

I wonder if Adventists were categorized as Evangelical, Mainline Protestant, or Other.

Thanks a lot for the support, Jeff. I hope the range of articles will be meaningful. Guest writers will take the next few essays, and then I'll be back on tap. Grace and peace.

Thanks for the encouragement Glenn. It's been a blessing to me, I pray it will be a blessing for others as well. There's much we Adventists can learn from our brothers and sisters in other traditions. We don't have all the answers, not even close---especially when it comes to being the church. Grace & Peace!

Great stuff.

Really amazed to see Adventist churches embrace the seasonal rhythm of church life and its practices. I'm still getting used to it as a baby Episcopalian.

It takes courage to do what you're doing. Keep it up.

One thing I find odd about this encounter is that Jesus responds rather provocatively I think to the synagogue's initial "amazement". It seems disproportionate to their actual expressions. It's no wonder they got upset. Although the account itself offers a confusing portrait of the people--they are amazed and spoke well of him but also remarked about his plainness and humbleness of origin (being just like they are), or in other words, couldn't believe he would be the messiah because of that.

But what's more is, just a chapter or two before, we've read the hymn/prayer by the priest in the Temple (at Jesus' circumcision) who states his belief that this child Jesus would inherit the throne of David, which Jesus obviously did not do. So the gospel writer himself offers a rather confusing portrait of Jesus; who he was and what he would do.

"Where is He now?" Well, I think He is opening up his wallet, her checkbook, his credit card or perhaps among those heading there to help out anyway they can. And perhaps He was there already and is among those who died when the earthquake hit. And I'm pretty sure He is among the living, helping the others to survive and eventually rebuild.
